The Golden Acre Shopping Centre in Cape Town has entered a new chapter with the official start of its retail redevelopment. This follows the high-profile sale of the centre for R781.5 million, approved by the Competition Commission in February 2025 after more than three years of complex negotiations. The transaction underscores the significance of the Golden Acre as both a commercial and cultural landmark in the Cape Town CBD.
Retail Phase Construction Underway
Construction has now commenced on the retail phase of the redevelopment, marking a critical step in transforming the centre into a modern, mixed-use precinct. This follows the successful residential conversion phase completed in late 2025. The project aims to create an 18-hour environment that serves daily commuters, office workers, and the city’s growing residential population.
The retail upgrade will focus on improving the centre’s functionality and experience. Planned interventions include rationalising the tenant mix, expanding trading areas, refreshing the existing finishes, and improving pedestrian flow and safety. The aim is to create a curated retail precinct that meets the needs of both residents and the broader commercial community.
Golden Acre Shopping Centre Redevelopment in Cape Town CBD
Golden Acre has long been a central node in Cape Town’s CBD. Opened in the late 1970s, the centre sits at the busy junction of Adderley and Strand Streets and is surrounded by major transport arteries. It benefits from direct access to Cape Town Station, the city’s main taxi rank, and the Golden Arrow central bus terminus, making it a vital hub for commuters. The centre comprises 65,000 m² of retail and office space and includes approximately 800 parking bays, serving thousands of Capetonians daily.

The sale of Golden Acre not only represents a significant investment in Cape Town’s retail landscape but also highlights the centre’s ongoing role as a social and cultural landmark. For decades, it has been synonymous with community events, holiday shopping, and its function as a key transit point linking the Grand Parade to the city’s transport network.
With construction now underway, the Golden Acre redevelopment is set to modernize one of Cape Town’s most vital city-centre assets, balancing commercial growth with commuter convenience and urban revitalization.
